Roberta Metsola, the first senior EU official to visit Ukraine since the March 24 invasion of Russia, called the war illegal, unprovoked and unnecessary, and promised further aid to Ukraine.
The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, met with the President of Ukraine Zelenski as part of her surprise visit to Kiev. Metsola vowed that the European Union would increase its assistance to Ukraine.
Metsola is in Kiev to show EU support for Ukraine. Her spokeswoman said that for security reasons the visit would not be given enough details.
Upon arrival in Kiev, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola wrote on Twitter: “I am in Kiev to give a message of hope.”
In a statement after meeting with Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Ruslan Stefancuk, she said the EU “will help you rebuild your cities and towns once this illegal, unprovoked and unnecessary war is over.”

She added that EU humanitarian and military aid to Ukraine would increase and said the EU “would take care of your families who have been forced to flee”.
The Maltese politician is the first senior EU official to visit Ukraine since the Russian occupation.
In mid-March, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki paid a visit to Kiev, along with his Czech and Slovenian counterparts, Petr Fiala and Janez Jansa. They met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski and Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal to demonstrate their solidarity with Ukraine.
