EMA approves Biontech vaccine for children as well

Children between the ages of five and eleven could soon be vaccinated against Corona in the EU.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has approved the use of the Biontech & Pfizer vaccine for children five years of age and older. The responsible EMA commission recommended in Amsterdam the expansion of the age groups that can be vaccinated with the preparation of Biontech and its American partner Pfizer. It is for the age group five to eleven years old. The dose for these children will be lower than for young people aged twelve and older. The vaccine will also be given to adults in the form of two injections in the upper arm at a time interval of three weeks.

The final decision is expected to be taken by the European Commission, but this is considered a formal issue. So far the Biontech vaccine Biontech and its American partner Pfizer, has been approved in the European Union for people aged twelve and up.

The vaccine known as Comirnaty was the first of four vaccines approved by the EU on 21 December 2020 , initially for the age group 16 years and older. At the end of May the vaccine was also allowed for children aged twelve and up.
