The German government will not set a limit on the number of refugees it receives from Ukraine.
German Transport Minister Volker Wissing said Berlin would not set an upper limit on the number of refugees it would accept from Ukraine.
Wissing said Germany still has to prepare for the unexpected, because since February 24, when Russia began its war against Ukraine, more than 5 million people have left Ukraine. “We are keeping the logistics and transport structures available because we can not predict the course of the war and we can experience an increase in the number of refugees at any time,” he said.
Wissing, who belongs to the Liberal Party (FDP), told the media group Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland that Germany would not refuse any refugees from Ukraine because people in need in Ukraine had to find refuge in Germany.
Volker Wissing also said that the ministry he heads has done its best to bring refugees from Poland, which has housed most of the Ukrainian refugees. Reception centers have been set up for Ukrainian refugees in Hanover, Cottbus and Berlin. From there they are distributed in other areas of Germany.
Wissing said the pressure on Poland is great because about 120,000 Ukrainian refugees arrive in Poland every day , and that more than 300,000 refugees have found refuge in Warsaw alone./DW
