A heat wave has swept across northern India, with temperatures as high as 49.2 degrees Celsius in the capital Delhi.

Residents of India are facing the fifth heat wave since March.

Officials have urged residents to take precautions, as temperatures could rise further.

They have warned that heat can cause health problems for those most vulnerable, including infants, the elderly and people with chronic problems.

Earlier this month, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged ministers to make plans to reduce the impact of extreme heat, as temperatures have risen faster than usual.

Although high temperatures are common in India, especially in May and June, summer has started earlier this year, as the first heat wave was reported in March.

The average temperature for a month has been the highest in 122 years.

The Center for Science and the Environment, an institute that deals with these issues, has said that heat waves this year have affected 15 regions, including Himachal Pradesh, which is known for its pleasant temperatures.
